mui Lab x Amber Caseトークセッション 「無為自然に啓発され、日本の美意識をカーム・テクノロジーに融合」

MILAN (May 25, 2022) – At Milan Design Week 2022 to be held from June 5-12, mui Lab, Inc., the Kyoto-based calm technology startup, will showcase its IoT system that turns furniture and other ordinary items into interfaces, using everyday human action as a prompt for digital sequence. For example, opening a curtain in the morning will prompt the “mui Board” (mui’s wooden interface device) on the wall to display a pleasant message to get your day off to the right start, the lights will slowly turn on when you wipe down your dining table, and lively atmospheric music will start playing when you put a vase on the table as breakfast begins. Because these “traditional” everyday objects allow natural movements of the human body – unlike conventional smart screen devices, which are used as remote controllers to operate smart home devices, that force people to crouch over them to tap and swipe – the system can create a strain-free digital environment that better serves users’ total well-being, while also keeping technology out of their consciousness.

“Smart screens demand all your attention to the small glass surfaces. Our mui IoT system expands the interactive dimension to encompass your entire home by seamlessly integrating technology into the items that you naturally reach for as part of your routine,” mui Lab CEO Kaz Oki said. “This not only creates a calm environment where humans and technology can peacefully cohabit, but also fosters their physical relationships with – and emotional attachment to – the objects around them through the sense of touch, sensations often lost in today’s digital society.”

Mui’s system is designed with the focus on the following:&nbsp;<ol><li>Expansion of interactive dimension: Our mui IoT system expands the interactive sphere on the smart screen three-dimensionally to encompass entire home, incorporating both objects (furniture) and human action as necessary elements of human-digital interaction.</li><li>Physicality: Our system uses everyday human action as a prompt to adjust the home environment, so people can live comfortably and achieve their total well-being without making any conscious effort, physically or mentally, to use technology.&nbsp;</li><li>Sustainability: People who use our system will recognize furniture as the medium with which to adjust their home environment. We believe this will prompt them to develop a sense of attachment to furniture – and eventually sustainable love for things around them.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ol>

Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and a writer of “<a href="https://calmtech.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Calm Technology</a>” published in 2015. Amber became an advisor of mui Lab as of April 1.

I think the value of the mui Lab exhibit is to show people different ways of interacting with technology, a way of having harmony with everyday actions in your life, and how those can wake up the house alongside you.  

It's really important to notice the the nuance of calm tech, it's not invisible, it's passed through. Take the window for example. When you see through the window, you are not focusing on the window. You are focusing outside of the window.  

When we think about the idea of user interface, we forget that user interfaces are all around us. They're the handle on a door. They're the window that you look through connect with the external world, the chair that you're sitting at, in fact, a lot of user interfaces are furniture. So when we think of mui Lab who's making a new kind of furniture, with something inside of it that's beautiful and harmonious, you can have this anywhere in your house and it can blend in with your environment.

テクノロジーは、人の暮らしを豊かにするための道具であるとmui Labは考えています。伝統的な生活における道具は、人を補助するためにあり、人の身体性や動きに沿ってデザインされ、人の暮らしに調和していました。金槌を使う時、金槌ではなく釘に集中するように、窓を覗く時、窓を通り越して窓の外を見るように、インターフェースとしての道具それ自体の存在は溶けています。 デジタル化が浸透した現代の生活では、道具であるはずのテクノロジーが存在を誇張し、人の注意を奪い、暮らしにアンバランスに介在しています。このようなテクノロジーは私たちの人生を豊かにしているのでしょうか。 人には身体と心がありますが、デジタル化の加速に伴い身体性は益々失われ、満ち足りるという感覚を得づらい状況ではないでしょうか。例えばコロナ禍において、オフィスで仲間と直接対話をすることと、オンラインでチャットをするのとでは、体験の質や印象、記憶の残り方が異なることを感じた方も多いと思います。 mui Labは、身体性をIoTの設計に取り込むことによって、人の心に寄り添うテクノロジーのビジョンを示します。デジタルの時代だからこそフィジカル（身体性）を取り戻すことで、より実感を伴い、満ち足りた生活を送れるのではないか – そうした人の本来的なウェルビーイングのあり方を示す機会となります。

インターフェース領域を空間へ広げ、身体性を組み込んだIoTの手触りを提案

朝起きてカーテンを開けると、muiボードに、家族との思い出の１ページがメッセージや絵などで表示されます。また、テーブルを拭くと、ゆっくりとダイニングの照明が点灯していき、テーブルに花瓶を置くと空間に穏やかな音楽が流れ始めます。こうして日々の動作に連動して朝食の準備が調っていきます。このような、人の生態行動に沿った穏やかなリズムで空間がしつらえられることによって、心や身体も自然に整っていきます。 加速するオートメーション化によって、ともすれば人間の能動性や選択の自由を奪い、恐怖心を増幅し兼ねないIoT技術を助長するあり方ではなく、人の自然な身体動作や所作に着目し、人間に自律性を取り戻す新たなIoTへのアプローチとなる展示です。 本展示のmuiシステムは、以下の点に重点を置いて設計されています。 <ol><li>インターフェースを空間まで拡張する - デジタルスクリーンなどの平面的なインターフェースから空間自体をインターフェース領域として捉えることで、暮らしの中の家具や人の身体の動きもインターフェースとして包含する。</li><li>身体性をIoTに組み込む - 人が日常的に取る自然な身体行動にIoTが寄り添うため、自然に暮らす中で環境からの反応が得られ、心身共にウェルビーイングな状態で快適な暮らしを味わえる。</li><li>サステナブルなあり方 - 家具をきっかけに環境からの反応が為されることで、家具に新たな役割が与えられる。それによって共に暮らしているという愛着感が醸成され、モノに対するサステナブルな感情が芽生える。</li></ol>

展示詳細

&nbsp;アンバー・ケース氏（<a href="https://calmtech.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amber Case</a>）は、2015年にCalm Technologyを書籍化した、人間とコンピューターの関係性を研究するサイボーグ人類学者であり、mui Labの現アドバイザーです。&nbsp; mui Labは、2020年に翻訳版『<a href="http://www.bnn.co.jp/books/10529/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">カーム・テクノロジー</a>』の監修と、「無為自然」の思想に啓発を受けたmui的なカーム・テクノロジーのアプローチについて寄稿しております。

この展示は、生活におけるテクノロジーに対する根本的な考え方の違いを示すものです。テクノロジーとの関わり方は多様であり、その一つとして、生活の中の日常的な行動と調和することで、家が整っていく姿を見せられる重要な機会になると思います。 カームテクノロジーは目に見えないものではなく、貫通するものであるというニュアンスを認識することが重要です。例えば、人は窓自体は見ませんが、窓の外を見ます。窓というインターフェースの存在は溶けて通過しています。
 私たちがユーザーインターフェースについて考えるとき、ユーザーインターフェースは私たちの周りに溢れているものだということを忘れてはいけません。ドアの取っ手、外界と繋がるための窓、座っている椅子やテーブルなど、実はユーザーインターフェースの多くは家具なのです。mui Labは新しいタイプの家具を作っているチームだと私は認識しています。美しく調和が取れていて、どこにでも馴染む、環境に溶け込むテクノロジーです。

Using mui’s interfaces should be a calm experience that sparks delight and positivity.&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe technology should be able to enrich users’ lives, or it would not be a useful tool for business “services.” We aim to create technologies that can bring peace and comfort to people, thereby inspiring them to be more creative.

1. Inspiring calm moments

mui’s interfaces are designed to transmit a minimum amount of information to help users focus only on what matters.&nbsp;&nbsp; In this digital era, we are constantly inundated with information. In order to live a more mindful life, we need technology to bring us only the information that truly matters in a calm manner, so we can focus on important tasks at hand and spend quality time with our loved ones. We aim to create technologies that are respectful of humans and put the decision-making control back in their hands, instead of telling users what to do. mui’s systems and devices are designed to foster new relationships between humans and technology.

2. Valuing simplicity over complexity

mui’s devices stay out of the user’s sight and consciousness whenever possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; We believe technology should work for humans, and not the other way around. Conventional technology forces people to adjust their behaviors to the requirements of devices that constantly demand their attention. We envision the technology of the future supporting humans in the background, by both visually blending into the surroundings and staying out of users’ consciousness. That’s when technology becomes truly useful to humans.

3. Staying out of users’ way 

mui’s technology will always exist in harmony with the surrounding environment, contributing to its ambience.&nbsp; The most comfortable environment is one with a perfect harmony among all its elements. Calm technology achieves a harmony among humans, technology and the environment, and performs without causing any distraction.

4. Pursuing harmonious beauty 

mui seamlessly integrates the functions of various devices and platforms to make technology feel like a natural part of users’ everyday living.&nbsp;&nbsp; Regardless of how hard we try, it’s not always possible to completely eliminate the gaps between various platforms and their functionalities. We can, however, use design techniques to make these gaps virtually unnoticeable. mui Lab does not create complex systems and devices that come with bells and whistles. We focus on making simple functionalities perform well, so users can accomplish what they want without any confusion or disruption.

5. Achieving seamless integration

mui’s technology delivers calculated “imperfection” mimicking that of nature.&nbsp;&nbsp; Imperfections in nature, such as the rugged surfaces of rocks and old trees, can be quite pleasing to our human touch, providing satisfying sensory feelings to those who caress them. mui embraces the imperfection of natural materials. By integrating intuitive interface technology into these tangible materials, we create visual and haptic devices that provide perfectly satisfying experiences for users.

Designing according to the law of nature

muiとの戯れは、喜びをもたらし、前向きな気持ちを促す&nbsp; テクノロジーによってもたらされた時間を、人が豊かに味わうことができて、はじめて「サービス」と言えるのではないだろうか。そのような、人が心地よくリラックスした状況を生み出すことで、新たな気づきがもたらされる瞬間をテクノロジーで描き出したいと考えている。

1. 穏やかな幸せをもたらすもの

必要最小限の情報に絞ることで、ユーザーは正しい選択に至ることができる&nbsp; 日々忙しい中で考えることは山積みである。時にはマインドフルになり、内面の望む声にも耳を傾けたい。いつでもどこでもほしい情報にアクセスできるのは便利だが、情報過多では注意散漫になり本当に望むことに集中できず、いつの間にか時が経っていた、という感覚は多くの人にとって他人事ではないのではないか。情報側の意図に振り回されるのではなく、主体的、能動的に選べる自由を尊重したい。&nbsp; 人と情報の関係性をリ・デザインし、その人や状況にとって相応しい情報のみを選択しやすい状態を設計することが望ましいと考える。

2. 必要最小限である  

ユーザーが情報を必要としない限りは静かに佇む。お役立ち者でありながら邪魔にならない謙虚者 人とテクノロジーの関係性においては人が主体であり、テクノロジーに主導権があるのは違和感を感じます。テクノロジーの進展によってできることは増えたが、現状は人が合わせることを強要され、人にとってのテクノロジーになっていません。また、そのようなテクノロジーは得てして存在感を主張してきます。テクノロジーはまだ未熟で発展途上です。本来のテクノロジーのふさわしいあり方は、人が望む事を叶えるために背景に溶け込んだ状態です。テクノロジーの存在を忘れたときにそのテクノロジーは本当に役に立つ状態なのではないでしょうか。

3. 主張せず控えめである

周りの環境と調和し、美しい雰囲気を醸成する&nbsp; 人にとっての心地良さとは、置かれた環境全体が調和していてストレスのない状態だと考える。人の心に寄り添うテクノロジーは、環境に調和して、それ自体が際立って人の注意を引くようなものでないようにしたい。

4. 置かれた環境と調和する

システムどうしの継ぎ目を滑らかにすることで、ユーザーに寄り添う&nbsp; 機能と機能の間を移動する時には物理的な溝に対面する。その隙間をなくすことはできないが、人がそれを意識することがないような配慮が大切である。使う人にとって、機能間の不連携に煩わされるのではなく、ただシンプルに望むことが達成されることが重要であり、それを叶えるテクノロジーの存在を設計したい。

5. 溶け込み馴染むもの

無作為な自然の持つ古びの美、滅びの美である侘び寂びを賞賛する&nbsp; 自然は常に変化し、時が経てば人も物も古びていく。そのありのままの姿に美を見出したい。&nbsp; 抗うのではなく、大きな流れのなかに無為自然に佇むあり方、その見えづらい価値を応用したい。&nbsp; 自然に触れると喜びを感じるように、人と自然の関係性を直感的なインターフェースとして昇華し、デジタルデバイスに触れることで喜びの瞬間を感じられる関係性を作り出したい。

「京都の共有財産である鴨川。デジタルテクノロジーと人間との関係性のヒントになるのではないか？」

人間は道具を開発する生き物です。人類は歴史的にも道具によって進化してきました。現代人にとっては、未来を形作る大きな要素としてデジタルテクノロジーがあります。良くも悪くも、経済や社会、環境、文化、人々の価値観や行動形態、そして生活までも大きく変える可能性を秘めているデジタルテクノロジーをどのようにデザインするべきか。その際に大切となる議論がデジタルテクノロジーと人との関係性です。それを考慮する際のヒントについて話し合いました。

mui Labは、人々が日常の中で常に触れるプロダクトや住まい環境、そしてそれらを通じた体験によって、心が豊かな方向に育まれることを願い、自然と人とテクノロジーの調和をスローガンに掲げています。 mui Labのシグネチャー的製品であるスマート・ホーム・デバイス「muiボード」のインターフェースには天然木を使い、使い手が穏やかな心持ちで利用できるよう設計しています。また、進化し続けるテクノロジーに合わせて人が不自然な所作をしたり、住まい環境の美観が壊されるような現代のあり方を問題視し、より人間らしく自然で快適であること、そして何よりも、人との関係性が健全に保たれることを大切に、デジタル情報とユーザーとの間に、余白が生まれることを意識してデザインしています。

そんなmui Labの目指すテクノロジーの理想のあり方を、CEOの大木は、トークの中で、京都の公共資産である鴨川を挙げて説明しました。「鴨川は人が作った人工自然ではありますが、あらゆる人、そしてあらゆる活動を抱擁しています。誰でもいつでも行けて、心を落ち着けられる場所、余白を得られる場所。muiはそんな人に寄り添うデジタルテクノロジーを目指しています。」という話をしました。

この大木の話を受けて、松島氏は、 「大木さんが話された鴨川の比喩はとても面白いですね。私の場合、『コモンズ（共有地）』を説明する際に海を事例としてよく挙げています。海はみんなでシェアできる共有財産です。『コモンズ』の特徴は、人々が共有できる場所があることです。場所という財産を共有するために、関係性を構築し、ルールが生まれます。鴨川沿いはみんなが使えるスペースになっています。直接的ではないものの、人とテクノロジーの関係性を考える際の大きなヒントになると思いました。また、どのように場所や環境を作るか？という点で『アフォーダンス』（補足：アフォーダンスという概念は、「環境や物は元から様々な使い方をアフォード（提供）しており、人や動物はその使い方をピックアップ（受取る）する。人や動物と、物や環境との間に存在する関係性」） も一つのヒントになります。今、新たなアクション、新たな関係性を作ることが求められています。アップルの創業者スティーブ・ジョブスが若い頃に言った言葉で、「Computers are like a bicycle for the mind」というものがあります。（補足：「人間を他の霊長類と分かつのは、人間が道具を作る生き物であることだ。人間は移動速度においては多くの動物に劣る。しかし、ある米国科学者が自転車を開発し、それによってコンドルよりも早く移動できるようになった。人間の可能性を広げる自転車は、人間の頭脳の可能性を広げる点においてコンピューターと同じだ。コンピューターは、人が開発した道具の中で人類の歴史を変えるほど革新的なものなのだ。」という発言のこと）　コンピューターは人の可能性を飛躍的に伸ばしましたが、その延長でインターネットが生まれ、今、行き過ぎたアテンション・エコノミーの時代になっています。その勢いはさらに増すでしょう。メタバースの世界が到来すれば人のあらゆる意識がますます盗まれる可能性があります。そういう時代にあって、人とテクノロジーの間に、どのようにスペースや余白を設けるか。mui Labの「テクノロジーの佇まい」はそれらを包括するとてもユニークなコンセプトだと思います。

トークセッション・サマリー

mui Labでは、デジタルテクノロジーをデザインする際に“余白”を意識したアプローチをとっていますが、その”余白”という抽象的な概念を説明するのであれば、それはつまり、意図的なデザインから距離を置き、手放すこととも言えると思います。 例えば、圧倒的なミニマリズムを目指し、削ぎ落とした結果、お部屋はシンプルになったかもしれません。しかし、その空間で住まい手は本当にリラックスして自分らしく暮らしているのでしょうか。 Kyoto Chamberイベントの際にアーティストのニシジマ氏は、「人の声を塞ぐように音楽だけが意図的に大きく鳴っているカフェよりも、暮らしの中のあらゆる音が聴こえて混沌な状態なんだけど全体的に調和している方が僕にとっては心地いい。」と話されていました。 京都の代表的な公共の川、鴨川を作った当初は、今のように京都中の人々が集い、多種多様な活動を受け入れる場所と完璧にイメージしてデザインしてはいなかったかもしれません。人々が暮らす中でアイデアを出し、互いに影響されあって、時を超えて変遷し、出来上がってきたのが今の形なのでしょう。 テクノロジーのデザインも、人の意図を離れた時、意図と意図しない余白、その”あいだ”に、言葉にはできない何かが存在し始めるのかもしれません。その自然発生的な何かを称賛できること、それ自体が余白なのだと思います。つまり、意図的に余白をデザインすることはできず、ある程度のところで手放し、見守り、抱擁することこそが余白なのだと。それは、人が同時に意識できること（持てる視点とも言えるかもしれません）には限界があるということをほのめかしています。その時は「完璧なデザイン」であっても、数年後に見返すとそうは思えないとか、他人から見ると良いと思えないということがよくありますが、そもそも完璧なものなんて存在しないのがこの世の常なのでしょう。

Kyoto Chamberのイベントで、美しいビジネスについて対話をしていた際に、ニシジマアツシ氏はこう話されました。「組織や個人の意図や意味性を中心に置くのではなく、意図を超えた何かを抱擁し、委ねることが大切だと思う」と。何かを創り上げる過程で多様なものが関わり合った時、または集団で生きる場所には、一見、混沌とも見えるけれども、調和した心地良さがあるのではないか？ それが、ニシジマ氏らが「silence/沈黙の窓」を通じて伝えたかったことなのだと感じました。&nbsp;

人間らしい暮らしを実現するためのテクノロジーを実装するmui Labとしても、テクノロジーの意味性や我々の意図を超えた何かにどれだけ委ねられるか、それは勇気の要ることであり、そういった挑戦を迫られているとも言え、大きな示唆を得る機会となりました。 鴨川をヒントに、あらゆる人のあらゆる営みを包括して人に寄り添うデジタルテクノロジーのあり方を追求し続けていきたいと思います。

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 7, 2024) — At CES® Unveiled today, mui Lab, Inc., the Kyoto-based calm technology startup, will unveil the market-ready “mui Board Gen 2,” the Matter controller that lets users create a restorative and low-carbon home environment through its intrinsically comforting natural wood interface. Scheduled for release in 2023, “mui Board 2nd Gen” is the Matter-ready version of the company’s signature wooden interface, “mui Board,” which is designed to keep technology out of users’ consciousness to prevent distraction and information overload. During CES, mui Lab will introduce the use of the mui hub board as a new calm, visual interface for Amazon’s Alexa. The “mui Platform” won the CES 2022 Innovation Award in the Smart Home category –the second time mui Lab has been awarded this honor following its 2019 win.

While modern technology benefits humans in many ways, it can also cause distraction and information overload. This year’s CES Innovation Awards program received a record high number of over 1800 submissions. The announcement was made ahead of <a href="https://www.ces.tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CES 2022</a>, the world’s most influential technology event, happening Jan. 5-8 in Las Vegas, NV and digitally. The CES Innovation Awards program, owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, is an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in 27 consumer technology product categories.&nbsp; mui Platform: Our “mui Platform” can turn any IoT devices and systems into “calmer” ones. mui Lab has launched "Alexa Smart Properties," an Amazon Alexa service for businesses and local governments in Japan. mui Lab's proprietary platform service, mui Platform, will be used to power Alexa Skill "Energy Dashboard".&nbsp; The energy management function (visualization of electricity and energy usage and demand response) was implemented into Alexa using Calm UI® design language. This design methodology employs Calm Technology, a set of principles promoted by mui Lab and garnering more global recognition.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<ul><li>Alexa Smart Properties, an Amazon Alexa service for business and local government has been available in Japan since December this year. With the launch of&nbsp;Alexa Smart Properties in Japan, Amazon has partnered with mui Lab, a key domestic platform solutions provider—leveraging its knowledge in its proprietary platform service "mui Platform" to support the introduction of the Alexa skill "Energy Dashboard" to Osaka Gas's experimental housing complex.&nbsp;</li><li>Alexa Smart Properties is an API for providing Alexa, a personal AI assistant, to businesses such as senior living facilities, hotels, condominiums, as well as local governments. Alexa Smart Properties solution providers will develop solutions that utilize a dedicated API, allowing businesses to offer their own customized services to users.&nbsp;</li><li>The Energy Dashboard provided by mui Lab uses Calm UI®, an experience design based on Calm Technology's approach. It implements functions such as electricity and energy usage visualization, demand response, and can be used with Amazon's Echo Show series of products.</li><li>The Calm UI® experience design uses an approach that does not draw undue attention to the consumer, but promotes efficient energy use, and is designed to create an experience that is both comfortable to live in and changes behavior toward protecting the global environment.&nbsp;</li></ul>

Alexa Smart Properties will be deployed by solution providers contracted by Amazon. Solution providers will be able to develop and implement Alexa-based services tailored to their business and local government needs using Amazon's dedicated Alexa Smart Properties API. Facility owners and managers will be able to efficiently manage the entire Amazon Echo series configured and installed to use Alexa Smart Properties. Alexa Smart Properties also allows users to access specific Alexa voice services without having to use their personal Amazon account or provide personal information, as the service is provided through a dedicated account with the corporation or local government that provides the service.&nbsp;
